Culture Shock Performing Arts Center offers classes for all ages in a variety of concentrations.

School Aged Children & Teens

Ballet (ages 4 and up)

An artistic dance form performed to music using precise and highly formalized set steps and gestures. Classical ballet, which originated in Renaissance Italy, established its present form during the 19th century. It is characterized by light, graceful, fluid movements and the use of ballet slippers and/or pointe shoes.

Pre-Pointe/Pointe (ages 12 and up)

Ballet with the addition of wearing Pointe Shoes.  This is by invitation only, and we typically wait until bones in the ankles are finished growing and are hardened (between 12-15 years old) before putting students on Pointe.  For more information on PrePointe, please email us!

Acrobatics (ages 4 and up)

Acrobatics is the performance of extraordinary human feats of balance, agility, and motor coordination.  This style in its own category is dynamic and fun, including flexibility training and strength and conditioning practices, with tricks like cartwheels, back handsprings, aerials, and much more.

Jazz (ages 6 and up)

Jazz dance is an umbrella term that encompasses several different styles of dance that became popular in the early 20th-century. Jazz dance has mixed roots extending back through both African and European traditions.  Today, Jazz dance continues to evolve and blend with other dance styles — for example, street jazz and theatre dance.

Some identifying elements of jazz dance include:

  • Isolations: a dancer isolates one specific part of their body, such as their rib cage or wrist
  • Grounded movement: dancers keep a low center of gravity, and often bend their knees
  • Syncopation: accenting an offbeat or note of the musical accompaniment that surprises the audience
  • Contractions: motivated by their breath, a dancer will make a C-shape with their core

Tap (ages 4 and up)

Tap dance is a type of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. The sound is made by shoes that have a metal “tap” on the heel and toe. There are several major variations on tap dance including: rhythm tap, classical tap, Broadway tap, and street tap.

Hip Hop (ages 4 and up)

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking which was created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.

Break Dance (ages 4 and up)

Bboy/Bgirl or Breakin is a hip hop dance style known as breakdancing. Breakin originated in the 70’s In NYC. This style consists of athletic movements such as the windmill and foot work like the six step. All of these movements are influenced by Latinos and African American culture as well as Gymnastics and Martial Arts.

Contemporary (ages 10 and up)

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements, and various emotions.

Musical Theater (ages 10 and up)

Students will learn how to portray stories and emotional contents of various musicals including love, humor, and anger through singing, acting, and dancing.  This is the perfect class for those aspiring actors/actresses, those wanting to perform in musicals, and wanting to learn how to break out of their shell!

Irish Step (ages 6 and up)

Irish stepdance is a style of performance dance with its roots in traditional Irish dance. It is generally characterized by a stiff upper body and quick and precise movements of the feet. With high energy moves and traditional Irish music, if you have ever wanted to dance like they do in Riverdance, this is your calling!

Martial Arts (ages 5 and up)

Jiu-Jitsu is the form of Martial Arts that is taught at Culture Shock.  Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds.

Polynesian (ages 5 and up)

Culture Shock began in 2002 with the Polynesian Culture as its heartbeat! Directors Anita and Trina moved from California, where they danced authentic Polynesian dance since they were young.  We are proud to offer this in its authentic form! Polynesian includes the styles of Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji and more!  Come experience the true “Culture Shock”

Preschool Classes (3-5 years)

Creative Movement

We offer this as an introductory to movement and music.  This is for our youngest students, ages 3-4. Children will learn how to use their fine and large motor skills, put together basic steps and motions to music, learn their rhythm and cultivate social skills.

This 45 min class introduces our youngest dancers aged 4-5 to these two classic dance styles. They will be introduced to the basic movements and attire of each concentration.
